Minister Lynch referred to the substantial changes that have been unfolding in the mental health services in Ireland in recent years. “The perception of an institutional style mental health service, standing in isolation and closed from the rest of the community, is thankfully becoming a thing of the past” said the Minister. The shift in the delivery of services from predominantly hospital-based care to a community care based service has been successful. The quality of care for persons with a mental illness has been greatly enhanced by this development and has had a positive impact not only for them but also for their families and for the community.
The Minister continued “I believe the new Community Mental Health Services Centre will prove to be a very valuable addition to the Mental Health Services for the people of Donegal. The centralization of mental health services in the new Centre, while at the same time complementing the local Residential and Day services should serve as a future model for service developments elsewhere and I would like to compliment everyone associated with this project”.
The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the Government to continue to modernize mental health services across all regions of the country, in line with ‘A Vision for Change’ and best international practice.
