The R&D work done at the Centre will lead to increased functionality for Dell.com improving the customer experience for the millions of people and businesses Dell engages with daily. The Dublin based R&D team will, working with colleagues in other Centres, deliver new services and functionality that will be added to Dell’s online platform.

The announcement was welcomed in Dublin today by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, who visited the Dell facility for the announcement.

Operating in over 100 countries and 34 languages, Dell.com is one of the largest online retailers in the world. Dell opened www.dell.com in 1996 and recorded $1 million in online sales by 1997. With billions of visits to Dell.com continuing every year, providing a world-class online experience is critical to the company’s operations.

The company launched a recruitment drive today for more than 50 highly skilled software engineers, technical programme managers and test engineers to help roll out the first phase of the new R&D centre.

In Dublin to oversee the launch, Dell’s Chief Information Officer, Paul Walsh said: “As an ecommerce pioneer and one of the world’s largest online retailers, Dell is uniquely positioned to understand the quickly evolving demands of this space and the customers it serves. We’re committed to rapid innovation that will ensure that Dell.com is a resource for customers and partners of all sizes for years to come.”

“Today’s announcement is an exciting development for Dell’s Commerce Services team and for the team in Ireland. The new Commerce Services R&D Centre is central to our vision for the future. It will foster innovation and enhance the overall experience delivered to our customers.  I would like to thank the government and its agencies for its support in helping establish the Centre here. As the company changes and evolves we are committed to ensuring that the types of roles based in Ireland are representative of the company’s global strategy – today represents a major milestone in that regard.”Aongus Hegarty, President Dell EMEA

Minister Bruton said “A key part of the Government’s jobs plan is attracting investment and employment from some of the biggest multinational companies in the world. What we are increasingly trying to do is to deepen the impact of these investments, so that we attract higher value activities which bring more benefits to their local area. Today’s announcement by Dell is a great example of this trend – here is one of the biggest companies in the world, deciding to locate a high-end commercial R&D centre in Dublin, with the creation of more than 50 high-end engineering jobs. I am delighted to welcome this announcement from Aongus and Paul, and look forward to working closely with Dell as they grow their operations in Ireland”.

Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland said “Dell is a very significant employer in Ireland with sites across the country. Dell makes a substantial contribution to Ireland’s economy each year.  Today’s launch of Dell’s new global Commerce Services R&D Centre in Cherrywood adds to Ireland’s reputation as a location for research and development facilities. I would like to acknowledge the vision and leadership shown in Dell Ireland, which has positioned the Cherrywood operations as the location for this R&D Centre and again proves Ireland’s ability to satisfy the needs of technology advanced companies.”

Dell’s online assets are built, designed and operated by Dell Commerce Services. Dell constantly evaluates the portfolio of services with the goal of enhancing the overall customer experience by allowing customers more choice and flexibility in how they interact with Dell. The Commerce Services R&D Centre will play a critical role in designing and building the platform upon which current and future services will be delivered.

The investment announced today builds on the decision announced in September 2013 to locate the EMEA headquarters for Dell’s Financial Services business in Ireland. It underscores Dell’s commitment to its operations in Ireland and highlights the significant role that the operations in Cork, Limerick and Dublin continue to play within the global business.
