ESB crews were working round the clock to restore power to thousands of homes which lost electricity during gale force winds of up to 120kmh again lashing many parts of the country. The strong winds are set to continue throughout today and it is expected to turn bitterly cold over the weekend, with temperatures due to drop as low as minus three tonight, , reports the Irish Independent
Motorists were warned that many untreated roads would be very icy and treacherous, especially after dark.
Met Eireann said the frosty conditions would continue tomorrow morning with the possibility of more overnight frost.
Westerly winds will be blustery on Sunday, but not as strong as earlier in the week.
According to the Met service the first half of next week was expected to be cold and showery with blustery northwest winds.
While high winds battered Dublin city, Donegal and the north west were hardest hit.
