New Building Regulations in force – Surveyors appeal to Government to increase resources for local authorities

The Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI), the largest representative body for construction professionals and estate agents, has reminded the public that new building regulations – contained in the Building Control Amendment Regulations 2013 – are now in force.

The SCSI said that it was important that the public and people carrying out construction work were fully aware of the regulations and the need to comply with them on any work started after March 1st.

Kevin Hollingsworth, Chair of the Building Surveying Professional Group of the SCSI said; “The new building regulations are an important step towards improving the standards of construction and ensuring safer homes for the public. The new regulations include mandatory certification by an Assigned Certifier such as a Registered Building Surveyor, Registered Architect or Chartered Engineer.

“The new system will give a clear and auditable trail of responsibility for buildings which is good news for prospective home purchasers. The Society is also calling for the allocation of increased resources to local authorities for higher targeted inspection levels to ensure full compliance with the regulations” Hollingsworth said.
