Construction Manager of the Year Announced

The 2013 Construction Manager of the year is Thomas O’Connor of Collen Construction for managing the construction of three Eirgrid & ESB substations during a 12 month period. Thomas received his title at the CMYA awards dinner in the Conrad hotel on June 7th. 

The adjudicators stated that Thomas is a construction manager with exceptional technical capability and in addition, an ability to communicate effectively with ALL members of his design and build team. During the project the design and build remit involved intense deliberation with the network suppliers, the design teams, the procurement and shipping process, and three construction teams on three sites.

For outstanding commitment to achieving the client’s goal, the ability to knock the necessary bureaucratic heads together, keeping the design team on target and overseeing the construction on three separate sites and completion on schedule earned him, in the opinion of the adjudication panel the Overall Award of Construction Manager of the Year 2013

It was a night of winners, with 4 gold, 3 Silver, 4 Bronze and 1 commendation awarded in a number of categories.

The adjudicators said the standard and quality of entries was of an exceptionally high standard with each winner truly deserving of their award.

The presentation of the awards was made by Duncan Stewart RIAI who also spoke about how the future of the construction industry lies within our ability to utilise existing buildings and the need to upgrade to the highest ecological standards to adhere to EU requirements and improve our carbon footprint within the industry.

The night itself would not have taken place without the support of our sponsors and many joined us on the night to celebrate the awards. Representatives from Kingspan, Kilsaran, Techrete, Modern Builder, E-Tec, Fendor, Hilti and Jan Janssens all enjoyed the evening with the winners.

Previous winner Mr Donal McCarthy also attended for the handover of the perpetual trophy together with the assessors and adjudicators, Gillian Fletcher, Louis Gunnigan, Elina Bychkova, Gerry O’Neill, Vincent McCarthy, Allan McMullen and Dermot Russell.

The level of skill among construction managers in Ireland, North and South, is renowned the world over.  They are widely respected and hugely competent individuals who continue to shine during a dull era within the industry.
