Property Industry Ireland welcomes appointment of Simon Coveney as Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government
Property Industry Ireland, the Ibec group that represents businesses working in the property and construction sector, has welcomed the appointment of Simon Coveney as the cabinet-level Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government.
Dr Peter Stafford, director of Property Industry Ireland said: “We are pleased that reform of housing policy is a priority in the new programme for government. The creation of a cabinet minister for housing with a mandate to produce a comprehensive action plan for housing delivery, and a Cabinet committee to oversee its implementation is a very positive step in ending the housing crisis.”
“Improved collaboration and dialogue between policy-makers and those who deliver houses is vital and the property sector is committed to playing its part to delivering government’s ambitious target for new housing output.”

“I am pleased that government has responded to our call to consider a reduction of VAT from 13.5% to 9% on new affordable housing, as well as a root-and-branch reform of the planning process to reduce uncertainty and delay. These are significant changes which will improve the supply and affordability of quality new housing and vital infrastructure.”
“The number of private and public houses built during the lifetime of this government will ultimately be determined by how speedily these reforms in planning, infrastructure and taxation are delivered.”
“I am pleased that government intends hitting the ground running and the housing sector looks forward to working with Minister Simon Coveney, his officials and cabinet colleagues and the Oireachtas to end the housing crisis.”
