We can also increase the quality of a civil 3D export, for example, to get a smoother ‘high res’ style topographical surface in the BIM. These surfaces can then be combined with utilities and building surveys to highlight interactions and penetrations between services, topographies and building structures.

The advantage of using BIM to show utilities is that information such as pipe material, descriptions of the pipe, manufacturer information, flow properties, pipe sizes, tables, etc. can all be maintained within the same 3D model file, ready for exporting to spreadsheets and data collating. This reduces the need to keep various types of information in different places and the time spent collating it all again at some point in the future.
