HEA call to add 1,250 additional ICT degree places welcomed by IDA Ireland

The call by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) for proposals from Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) to add 1,250 additional ICT degree places has been welcomed by IDA Ireland.

“Input by enterprise is important to ensure that there is a good match between the requirements of enterprise and output from the HEI’s. This will greatly help new investment. The HEI’s have until January 9, 2015 to make their submissions”.

“With secondary students over the next few months considering their CAO choices, a job in technology offers great opportunity and rewarding careers for graduates. Demand from international companies is very strong for degree qualified ICT talent – these positions reward well.”

“A key part of the call is the requirement for companies to be involved in the design of ICT courses. This requirement provides an ideal opportunity for companies to have real input into course design in computer science and electronic engineering and I would encourage companies to liaise with HEI’s of their choice on the opportunity.Martin Shanahan, CEO at IDA Ireland

“The outlook is very positive for new investment and companies regularly talk about the calibre of graduate talent coming from the country’s HEI’s. I would encourage students to seriously consider a career in technology and the opportunity to work with some of the world’s leading international companies.”

“9 of the world’s top 10 software companies have significant operations in the country. Investment is ongoing with significant investment announcements already this year by companies such as Intel, SAP, PayPal, Dell, Amazon, Ericsson, Groupon, Avaya and Workday.” www.ida.ie
