Building begins on new £58m windfarm at Dunbeg

Construction work has begun on a £58m windfarm that will meet the power demand of 24,000 homes once completed.

Located on the outskirts of Limavady at Dunbeg, the 42 megawatt windfarm will be fully operational later this year.

It will be operated by Gaelectric and is one of nine windfarms across Northern Ireland that the company has already secured planning approval for.

Gaelectric officially opened its first operational windfarm in Northern Ireland in May 2013, with the £20m Carn Hill windfarm in Newtownabbey.

The company’s commercial manager, Patrick McClughan, said: “Gaelectric plans to invest £600m in Northern Ireland in renewable energy generation and energy storage over the next three years.

“Dunbeg will not only provide a significant boost to Northern Ireland’s renewable energy capacity, it will also generate jobs and provide economic activity.” Source: Belfast Telegraph.
