Dan-Stubbergaard

Founded in 2005 by Dan Stubbergaard and Vanessa Miriam Carlow, COBE (whose name is derived from the cities in which they are based: Copenhagen and Berlin) is a progressive, contemporary community of architects that focuses on sustainability and design. Although a very young practice, they quickly gained an innovative reputation, winning a number of high profile projects and prizes, including the Golden Lion of the 10th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2006 and Scandinavia’s prestigious Nykredit Architecture Prize in 2012. Speaking about the COBE approach, Dan Stubbergaard says “For us architecture is not a matter of a certain style or form but more importantly the adaptability to the local context, its social life and the users. It is our aim to create social interaction through all our projects. This is why COBE have developed a community of architects with capacity within all scales from urban planning, to building and public space: elements which all together creates the physical conditions for peoples life and social interaction.”

Today, COBE is two separate companies – one seated in Copenhagen (COBE ApS headed by Dan Stubbergaard), and one in BErlin (COBE Berlin GmbH headed by Prof. Dr. Vanessa Miriam Carlow). Known for ambitious metropolitan developments such as the new Culture House and Library in Copenhagen, designed to create a landmark and to provide a meeting point for the local community, COBE is currently realising major projects in Denmark: the Nørreport Train Station in the centre of Copenhagen, The ROCKmagnet, Denmark’s museum of rock music in Roskilde, and consulting on the development of Nordhavnen (Copenhagen), Scandinavia’s biggest urban development of the moment.

Dan Stubbergaard will bring to the discussion questions on why good design matters to society and the impact of architecture on people and communities. This is something that will resonate with an Irish audience,” said Nathalie Weadick, Director of the IAF.

Rory McGowan, Director of Arup, added “It will be very interesting to hear Dan speak about the growth of a successful and innovative practice, started eight years ago, that has grown from strength to strength in that period.

The Irish Architecture Foundation and Arup have come together in a partnership initiative to present NEWNOWNEXT, a series of 12 architectural talks over three years, all free to the public, to shine a spotlight on great architecture from around the world and here at home.

The 2013 NEWNOWNEXT series comes to an end on November 27 with a talk by Andrew Griffin and Maxim Laroussi of Urban Agency (IRL/DK), with offices in Dublin and Copenhagen, who operate in the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape design. Other architects already featured in the series in 2013 include ecological urbanism pioneer Jeanne Gang (USA) and Mexican architect Tatiana Bilbao.
