New dual carriageway will replace part of Sligo-Dublin road

A stretch of the N4 Sligo-Dublin road described as one of the dangerous pieces of road in the country is to be replaced as part of plans proposed yesterday by Sligo County Council.

Local campaigners in the N4 Action Group  had erected 30 white crosses along the 10km stretch from Castlebaldwin to Cloonamahon to mark the number of deaths on the road in recent years.

The original basis for the proposals announced yesterday were first highlighted in a 1998 study by the National Roads Authority.

The new road is planned to be  a dual carriageway and will be over 14km in length.

As part of the new road’s construction, a compulsory purchase order is proposed to acquire 181.5 hectares of land with 22 public rights of way and eight private rights of way proposed to be extinguished. Source: The Journal.
